Ancient Origins
Corn, or maize, has a history dating back nearly 10,000 years. It originated in what is now Mexico, where ancient peoples domesticated it from a wild grass called teosinte. Early corn cobs were much smaller than modern varieties, only about an inch long.

Global Spread
After European contact with the Americas in 1492, corn spread rapidly around the world. By the 16th century, it was being grown in Spain, Africa, and China. Its ability to grow in diverse climates made it a valuable crop worldwide.

Modern Corn
Today, corn is the most widely grown crop in the Americas. The United States alone produces about 40% of the world's corn supply. Modern breeding has created varieties with higher yields, disease resistance, and specialized uses from sweet corn to industrial products.
